Painted Farmhouse Furniture New at Laurie Rohner Studio

I have just finished two new pieces of distressed farmhouse style furniture and they are now in Between The Weeds. Maybe it is the cold air or the season that inspired me to add black distressed rubbed finishes to the line of farmhouse decor and furniture to the shop. I figure not everyone may want flowers and vines on their furniture. I used re-purposed wood and mixed in some new wood made them look well-worn and offer them at an affordable price. I have always adored black distressed finishes because they are versatile and forgiving (the finish that is). I have several new designs being finished up so stay tuned to see what is new.

Stop Promoting Etsy,Start Promoting Your Shop.

Today I decided to do a little search to see if all the hard work I have just finished is paying off. What I discovered was my etsy shop is off the grid in search-ville. I do not know why and really this is not the first time I have seen this happen with my etsy shop. So again I ponder why?

It is why I feel I have to share this. I, and maybe there are many feeling the same, find etsy has lost the creative flair of handmade original work. It panders to making money for the people working there and the people remotely connected to etsy, through vicinity or age.Hey that is OK but when it comes to doing what they should to make sure the shops that are syndicated are being submitted correctly. It is why I keep the shop open at etsy. I promote and I have made them a nice bit of change. So why did etsy feel it necessary to roll out a new platform at the busiest time for shop owners? Why is it a coincidence that etsy changes things up and the searches show no etsy shops in web searches or shopping. Etsy broad search did come up but that is as good as getting on the front page of etsy, worthless.

Affordable Canvas Artwork
My solution is be sure you have a blog or website off of etsy that sells your beautiful custom unique quality handmade work. Promote it along with your etsy shop but funnel everything back to your outside web/blog. Maybe etsy will see shop owners spending their precious minutes and hours in the day, discovering their coffers dwindling, realizing the value of all shop owners.

By the way if you get a chance my outside online shop is Laurie Rohner Studio please see what I have done. It is a free website with weebly.com. Very easy to develop and a bunch of fun. Everything is set up with PayPal just as with etsy. I have sold a few things and now I am putting much more attention into the design. Hope to see you there.

I have a bunch of blogs, this one and also one at Between The Weeds and The Painted Cottage Home which are through wordpress.com. Since broadening my impact on web searches and actively working with each venue I have been funneling hits for my etsy shop at Between The Weeds but now I added my Laurie Rohner Studio Shop to the listings. My hits have started to take off.

It simply means if you are promoting your shop at etsy you are promoting etsy and in turn helping etsy. When you tweet your shop listing I now remove @etsy and add another link to my other shop or more description for that item. The best of both and it is promoting just my shop. Think about it Etsy is getting free advertising and your free labor every time but are your sales soaring?

May you have a fabulous week selling and create your future smartly.

Beautiful House For Sale in Elkin, NC

For Sale by Owner
House For Sale in Elkin NC
I have decided to put my home on the market and am selling it on my own. If you are interested in dropping by for a look please feel free to do so. This has been a wonderful home for me these past 4-5 years but I am now looking at changing things in my life. I have set up this blog so you can see this amazing house and fall in love with it the way I did almost 5 years ago.
383 Hawthorne Rd. Elkin, NC
It is a three bedroom home with two full baths. It is just over 1900 of heated square feet but has over 2300 square feet of living space. On the side of this cottage cape is a gorgeous spacious screened porch and the back has a covered deck which spans the entire back of the cottage. I have spent many hours watching wildlife and birds from this tree house vantage point. Just below this covered deck is another open deck that originally sat a hot tub with plenty of room to enjoy the mature plantings making this spot private for late night entertaining. It sits on a corner lot and is a little over 1/2 acre of land with mature trees giving shade in the hot months. The landscape is filled with over 30 azaleas, assorted holly, several boxwood, magnolia and dogwood with forsythia lining the property.

ASKING PRICE $197,500.

I have listed my home with Owners.com. Click here to view my listing. I am finding there are great similarities between marketing a house online and marketing my business. I have started to carry out many of the same techniques and thought I might share them with you. First I am getting the word out as much as possible and with my clients any question asked is answered as truthfully as I know how. I know the work I do is quality and for the most part you need to experience my finished product to appreciate it and it is the same with seeing a house. Photos can show you some things but to get the feeling of a home you need to walk through the front door and experience it. You might love it or you might not. If you enjoy cottage homes and respect the craftsmanship of yesteryear please find a little space in your hectic schedule and visit this home. It exudes possibilities and character.
I will have a pot of tea or coffee ready.

Reaching Goals.

"The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don't define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them."

Happy Birthday to a Kindred Spirit.

The lady in the middle surrounded by love.

I was the one who shot the photo, it was a beautiful autumn day and I was enjoying the company of these wonderful friends. The man in the shot is my father, the other two are the dogs, Katie the blonde and Duffy, still a growing pup, and the lady was my kindred spirit and dear friend. She also happened to be my mom. So much time has passed but time is a funny thing, measured in years, but we can experience the feeling in a nano second with a single thought.
Happy Birthday you dear sweet spirit and I hope you feel the love and light I feel for you in this moment. Remember everyone who has touched your heart (and some who didn't) are always with us so say hello or think about the beautiful moments you shared (they are like energy hugs of love) because even if you can not see them they really are still there.
Go ahead, try it.

Business Using Grounding Techniques.

I found it enlightening, the parallels between business and spirituality grounding techniques, as a way giving your communication skills a heightened edge. Meditation grounding and spirituality has made its way into so many areas. Not so New Age any more but becoming main stream thought.

How to Start Conversations That Make Instant Connections

An article written BY | July 18, 2012 For entrepreneurs, knowing how to communicate clearly and effectively is critical in leading a company -- and selling your business ideas. But the words you speak and hear are only a small part of getting your message across to your employees, customers and investors. It is the way you speak and listen that makes all the difference in the world.

Consider these 12 steps for starting conversations that click and, ultimately, lead to more productive relationships:

Step 1: Relax. Stress generates irritability, which leads to anger, and anger shuts down communication. Studies have shown that a one-minute relaxation exercise will increase activity in the brain that is essential for communication and decision making. So before you enter any conversation, do this:

First notice which parts of your body are tense based on a scale of one to 10 (1 = completely relaxed; 10 = extremely tense). Write it down. For 30 seconds, breathe in slowly to the count of five, and then exhale slowly to the count of five. Repeat this three times. Now, yawn a few times and notice if it relaxes you. Assign it a number between one and 10 and write it down. Now stretch your body, beginning with the muscles of your face, scrunching them up, then stretching them out. Then gently move your head from side to side and front to back. Scrunch your shoulders up and then push them down. Next tighten your arms and legs for a count of 10; then relax and shake it out. Take a few more deep breaths. Once more assign a number to your state of relaxation and write it down, noticing any improvement.

Step 2: Stay present. When you focus on your breathing and relaxation, your attention is pulled into the present moment and inner speech stops, at least momentarily. If we bring this "presentness" into a conversation, we hear the subtle tones of voice that give emotional meaning to the speaker’s words. Being in the present moment will allow you to quickly recognize when a conversation begins to go astray.

Step 3: Get quiet. Developing the skill to remain silent helps you give full attention to what other people say. To hone that skill, try an exercise with this online bell. Push the button to "strike" it then focus on the sound. As it fades, listen more closely. Ring the bell several more times, and listen more closely. This is the attentiveness you need when listening to someone.

Step 4: Be positive. Take a mental inventory of your mood. Are you tired or alert, anxious or calm? Then, ask yourself: do I feel optimistic about this conversation? If there's any doubt, anxiety, or frustration—postpone it. If you can’t, then at least mentally rehearse the conversation first, which will help you spot statements you might make that would undermine your goal.

Step 5: Confirm values. To make a conversation balanced and fair, everyone has to be clear and up front, about values, intentions, and goals. If your values are not aligned with those of the person you're trying to do business with, trouble is unavoidable. So learn about the person's values as soon as you can. But beware: some people will mask the nonverbal cues of deceit and just tell you exactly what you hope to hear.

Step 6: Evoke memories. Enter the conversation with an expression that conveys kindness, compassion, and interest. But it cannot be faked. So if you're not feeling it, tap into a pleasant memory of people you love and respect. It will soften the muscles around your eyes and evoke a gentle half smile on your face, which stimulates a feeling of trust in the other person's brain.

Step 7: Watch nonverbal cues. Keep your eyes on the person you're speaking with, but don't stare. And stay focused, making sure you aren’t distracted by inner thoughts. If a person wants to conceal a feeling— out of embarrassment or the desire to deceive— it might only appear for a quarter of second. But remember that micro-expressions can only tell you that a true emotion is hidden, it won’t tell you why or whether the person is purposefully concealing it.

Step 8: Be appreciative. The first words you speak set the tone for the conversation, so begin with a compliment and end it with another compliment that expresses appreciation. Of course they must be genuine. Ask yourself: what do I really value about this person? Then, ask yourself which of those attributes you respect most. Remember this as you talk, too, and listen for an opportunity to share it.

Step 9: Speak warmly. If you drop the pitch of your voice and talk more slowly, the listener will respond with greater trust. When we are angry, excited, or frightened, we raise the pitch and intensity of our voices, and it varies a lot in speed and tone. On the other hand, a warm supportive voice is the sign of leadership and will generate more satisfaction, commitment, and cooperation between members of your team.

Step 10: Slow down. Slowing down your speech actually helps people understand what you are saying and deepens their respect for you. It's not as intuitive as it may seem, and as children we automatically speak fast. But you can teach a child to slow down by speaking slowly yourself because they’ll match you. A slow voice has a calming effect on a person who is feeling anxious, whereas a loud, fast voice stimulates excitement, anger, or fear.

Step 11: Be brief. Limit your speaking to 30 seconds or less. Our conscious minds retain only a tiny bit of information. If you need to communicate something essential, share it in even smaller segments— a sentence or two— then wait for the person to acknowledge they’ve understood. If the person remains silent, say another sentence or two, and then pause again. It also helps to write down major points before the conversation.

Step 12: Listen deeply. Stay focused on the person who is speaking: their words, tone, gestures, facial cues— everything. When they pause, you’ll need to respond to what they just said. If they go and on, then just study them and watch how your own inner speech reacts, without worrying about what you may remember or forget. You’ll actually be practicing a form of meditation that is neurologically enhancing and emotionally relaxing— a far cry from what we usually feel when we are bored by someone speaking.

What is your hard work worth?

Original post on betweentheweeds.com

Painted Furniture
Wooden Box by Between The Weeds.
Recently I was cleaning out some old paperwork and discovered an old ledger from my shop in Vermont. I sifted through the pages my mind reminiscing about Whitefield Studio and the painted furniture I had in the shop. How different it was then. The internet had popped its bubble and no one had online shops anymore. What had struck me was how much had been sold. The years seem to muffle the mind and we have a tendency to forget good and bad events. As the pages flipped by in my fingers I noticed how much had been charged for all these sold pieces. I am amazed to discover that more than 12 years ago I sold painted furniture for more money than I do now. Mainly my boxes and trunks sold for $150 to $350 and since they are not around now I somehow forgot this very important fact. So, why did I feel my work was worth less now? Why did I now doubt my abilities? And what do I want to do with this new information?
Roller coaster "Windstorm", Fun Fore...

Life we all know is a roller coaster with lots of ups and downs, twists and turns, and sudden stops. Experiences (hate to use the word challenges)molding and teaching us, all make for an awakened spirit, but what about the other side of You. The logical ego which is just as important as the spiritual side, gets left out of the experience. No one wants to acknowledge this side of ourselves, we are to observe the ego as if it was the black sheep in the family. We instead need to balance the two, cherishing and accepting the roles each play as important parts of a whole spiritual being. For myself my ego was working overtime not inflating my self-esteem but with each monstrous experience deflating how I saw myself. OK when you see the truth about your self or ego it looses its power and healing begins. I think it is one of the life battles of most creative people. We are so intuitive and empathetic to the energies around us we end up absorbing it into ourselves through our life experiences. In the last 12 years I around in the roller coaster seat and once almost fell right out. I allowed my adorable ego to get the better of me.

I realize the economy thing is a culprit for many pricing issues. It does not answer the question why am I charging less now than 12 years ago. If you are producing the same or better quality of work, than your price should show your efforts. Competition is fierce online and social media changes rapidly. You work in the studio or shop long hours for less than minimum wage. Really? Why because someone out there you don't even know or worst do know told you they think your work is worth only this amount. So you hang your head and accept it. Wrong. First off if you allow the energy of that statement to grab hold shake it off you, NOW. Give yourself a good shake, like a dog shake down.

Now listen up I am going to let you in on something fabulous. If you believe your work is unique, professional, exceptional, the very best you can do at the moment and you feel it down to your toes and out into your finger tips and your hair stands up on your body, you need to charge a worthy price. Your work, your energy, your creative idea is a valuable asset and no other has it so charge for it. The key is you and only YOU must fully believe it is true. It is the first step and I hope you do. Your thoughts are energy and you need to tend to your thoughts as you do to your work. Keep your passion for your creative purpose alive and the Universe will respond to that energy in kind, with higher prices and great clients.

My style is discovered Upscale Cottage Contemporary.

Upscale Cottage Painted Farmhouse Wood Box Garden Flowers
Sometimes an answer is right in front of your nose and this past week has proven to me again how that statement is true.  As an artist I am always trying to expand my work. It was drilled into me from the moment I sat down in a studio with an instructor watching and critiquing my work. By the end of the year you are supposed to have created a body of work that is new fresh and speaks to the world with your distinctive style. I had forgotten what was taught to me years ago and instead have chased trends. Maybe it was boredom but I know that would be a lie. I had fallen from creating from the heart center, my purpose or gift, to creating from the ego. The ego wants recognition, wants ‘likes’ and is driven by sales (which is a good thing) and always needs more.
The answer came to me after receiving photos I had ordered of some of my work. I wanted to use them on cards and send them to clients and friends.  I had put them away to work on at a later date. After rediscovering them I looked at the images and found all the work on each photo had been sold. The photos I had chosen was of work in the shop that was for sale and this was only a couple of months ago. What I found was the thread I had missed. It was my style and it was a style I admired. Why else would I have chosen the photos of this particular work? Throughout the years I have tried many designs for decor and furniture. I pulled out my books with the past work filling the pages and as simple as the nose on my face was the answer. What worked? The detailed painted garden and woodland flowers, birds on branches that wrap around the sides and top with my signature delicate ink line work. Amazing there it was my style.
My style is timeless and unique. It is contemporary and upscale. It is not trendy so it will never not be the ‘in thing’,  just a treasure to endure time. It is time for me to define it and embrace it because if I do not how can I expect anyone else to cherish my work. I have decided to define my style as Upscale Cottage Contemporary. I am taking the chic out of cottage and making the next step to contemporary. My work is the crisp clean lines found with contemporary work but stays with the high-end feel of a Hampton Cottage. Visit my shop at Between The Weeds for recent work.

Fairy Wish Magical Pillows by Between The Weeds.

Briar has been busy helping me creating these sweet little fairy wish pillows for sale now in my shop, Between The Weeds. She has added some fairy magic and given each pillow a blessing of love and joy with the added kick of abundance. Just remember you have to believe in fairies to have their magic happen.

Buy these fairy wish pillows now at Between The Weeds.

Fairy Wish Hand Painted Cottage Heart Pillow

Fairy Wish Hand Painted Cottage Heart Pillow Fairy Wish Hand Painted Cottage Heart Pillow Fairy Wish Hand Painted Cottage Heart Pillow Fairy Wish Hand Painted Cottage Heart Pillow Fairy Wish Hand Painted Cottage Heart Pillow
Fairy Wish Hand-Painted Heart Pillow is enchanted with fairy magic and a simple inspiring word 'grow'. The pillows are hand sewn and slightly stuffed, made of cotton canvas painted with acrylic paints and ink and heat sealed. Attached is a natural wool heavy yarn. This pillow the fairies picked spring fresh colors of pinks blues lavenders and sage green ( that matches the wool). On the back of this pillow is a field thistle.

Size of pillow: 9"l x 5.5"w x 1.5"d.

Though the fairies inspired the making of these new pillows the style is influenced by my love of farmhouse cottage chic. Hang the pillow on a door knob or nail or the knob of a dresser to remind you to keep growing. Age should never stop anyone from remembering to grow.

These are my original designs and I hand craft each piece.

New Cottage to buy at Between The Weeds

Woodland fairies new cottage from Between The Weeds.

Custom fairy bed with shams and coverlet.
Custom fairy bed with shams and coverlet.
This is the second cottage fairy house Briar and I completed this week for our shop. Every fairy house I create once the carcass framing is finished starts to form its own personality. There are times when I do not think I am the one actually sculpting these unique and one of a kind woodland fairy homes. I spend hours gluing and find the right piece to fit into a nook on the wall or what branch goes where after foraging the roadsides and woods. Yes they may not last for years outside in the cottage garden, but what a statement inside a whimsical enchanted room.

Imagine two fairies in love and moving into their first little cottage together in the woodland forest. Constructed from twigs moss and branches and things found in the woods and nature, my cottage is enchanting, full of imagination and loaded with mystical tree magic. The back is made of split branches with an opening for gazing up at the moon and stars. The roof is from twigs and moss and cones with a few bobs thrown in. The sides are unique with one side being made from fallen bark and moss and the other side from cut slivers of branches and pebbles in between. On the outside front post is a round sign (blank) ready to be personalized with name house number or greeting.

Inside is a custom bed painted black with a custom blue and white fabric and a fern frond for added decor. A table is next to the bed. On the other side is a covered chair in matching fabric and a table. Overhead is a hanging light made from a clay pot suspended from the rafters with wire. The floor has a burlap rug and moss grows around the edge.

A friend is having a beautiful woodland themed wedding and you want to give a special gift? I have created this woodland fairy house for just that person. Of course this house is also a fabulous gift to mark the new house you just bought together or the anniversary you have coming up or you just love fairies and fairy houses.

Outside measures 12″ x 11″ x 8″ roughly.
Built over a wood carcass and weighs about 4lbs.

Great gift idea for woodland fairy weddings by Between The Weeds.

bed woodland fairy house
Bed before added to fairy house.
Briar, head fairy at Between The Weeds,  is busy at her drafting table with plans for some of her newlywed friends. It is a lot of fun having someone so energetic assisting me in the fairy shop these days. This is one of the newly constructed woodland fairy house wedding cottages in my fairy shop at BetweenTheWeeds. What I like the most about this woodland cottage is the detailed work on the sides and the custom fabric bed. I have added a few more photos here of this sturdy mystical tree magic fairy house.

Fairies have honeymoons too. A woodland cottage fairy house constructed by hand out of branches twigs and wood form this enchanting honeymoon cottage. Inside is a painted custom bed for two with canvas linens and a teal ribbon throw across the bottom. Next to the bed is a table from a branch. On the other side of the room is a chair and table with a clay pot hanging from the rafters for light. There is a chair at the foot of the bed and a bark floor. Moss is growing around the edges and twigs soften the one wall. Both side walls are painted a pretty shade of Indian Sky.

The outside of the house has bits and bobs of sea glass and raffia and a blank piece of wood across the front (for personalizing the house) with the name of the newlywed couple or date or just a sweet blessing to mark a special day. The back is formed with split branches and the sides are split branches moss pebbles and cones combined.

Handmade artist at work on Etsy.

There are so many beautiful imaginative people creating unique handmade work over at Etsy.com. It is becoming hard to find these wonderful artists including myself. I personally feel when you assemble pieces and call it handmade is wrong and diminishes the work of the artists who work hard being unique and original. So I have decided to search out these fine artist and promote their wares here the best I can. Handmade is a fabulous way to not only give back to the creative energies in the Universe but also give you the peace of mind that what you purchase is truly uniquely it own creation.
